WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades will give you a boosts in certain stats. Each upgrade boosts the level of an item by 3. A random extra substat is also increased with every upgrade.

Upgraded gear generally sees more value in trade, unless it has inherently low requirements (like the FB sorc's shield) or very high stat variation (like Eth titan weapons). These types of gear get less value from upgrading due to the need to roll to get a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader lets players upgrade their gear by giving the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any kind of armor or weapons. The item used to upgrade the item will be consumed and cannot be used again. Upgrades can also be used to create enhancements.

You can upgrade your gear anytime by visiting the upgrader in any major city. To ensure that your equipment is up-to-date it is recommended you visit the upgrader each couple of weeks.

The cost of upgrading will be based on the current level of the gear being upgraded but they will always be cheaper than buying new equipment from other sources. Upgrades like upgrading a Benthic chest to 385 ilvl will cost you 20 recycle points. Buying a similar item upgrading will cost you 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used to purchase tools, armor, weapon and accessory upgrades. They are purchased by players through item upgrader NPCs in exchange for a variety of currencies, and can also be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade is able to be applied to any weapon, tool or armor. The button will display a preview of an item level upgrade (hikvisiondb.webcam published a blog post)'s next level of upgrade, when there are enough materials.

Upgrade costs vary depending on the slot of the item upgrader kit and the current level of the item upgrades. For instance weapons are more expensive than gloves, bracers, or bracers. Each step costs 15 Flightstones and a variety of crests, with certain upgrades having a discount to reduce the cost of Flightstones or the crests used. Once an item is upgraded to a certain degree it is able to be degraded and returned to the upgrader for a lesser amount of both currency types.

Many locations offer item upgraders which include the main island and a few outposts. The NPCs offer both an upgrade coupon and a chance to obtain a new recipe. The discount for upgrading increases as more items are upgraded. It can also be increased by having players finish certain achievements or quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an item upgrader at beginning, unlike Cromwell from Baldur's gate II. Instead the NPCs that are available to help with upgrades are acquired via a variety of means which is both an improvement and a drawback.

In Season 3, the upgrade system has been modified a bit, and several new features added. Once a player obtains an upgrade to a specific item level for a particular armor slot, upgrading other items to that level will cost less, even in the event that they belong to a different gear set.

The discount is applicable to all accounts. The amount of Harbinger Crests needed for upgrades is reduced too, but it is only available when certain milestones are reached.

Crests

Players can earn crests through working through tasks at the appropriate level. This could mean doing outdoor activities or item level Upgrade doing dungeons or raids in all difficulties to get equipment of lower tier or Mythicbosses for raids, or dungeons that have a high difficulty for endgame gear. The crests can later be exchanged at an item upgrader NPC like Cuzolth in Dornogal or Vaskarn in Valdrakken to obtain the appropriate upgrade pathways and steps.

The new currency system isn't too difficult to use, but it brings some changes to the process of upgrading. When a piece attains the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer or Adventurer) it is no longer required to purchase Flightstones. This change allows players to upgrade their gear to the highest level possible for all their characters instead of relying on seasonal loot.

It's also important to use crests with care, since they are only used for one purpose. It's best to use your Whelpling-rank crests on the highest-quality gear that you can find, and save Drake and Wyrm Crests for the next set of upgrades. This is particularly true for items such as trinkets and rings that take up multiple slots. The discount on the account is only applicable when all slots on the character are filled with high-quality equipment.
