Study of Chinese Learners' Pedagogical Choices in Korean

Its ability to use two or more stages to manipulate the social variables that are related to politeness is a plus. This can assist researchers study the role of prosody in communication across cultural contexts, a key issue in cross-cultural pragmatics.

In the field of linguistics DCT is one of the most effective tools to analyze the communication habits of learners. It can be used to study many issues, such as politeness, turn-taking, and the use of lexical terms. It can be used to determine phonological complexity in learners' speech.

A recent study used the DCT to assess EFL students' refusal skills. Participants were given various scenarios and asked to select an appropriate response from the choices provided. Their decisions were influenced by four factors such as their personality and multilingual identities, their current lives and their relationship affordances. The RIs were recorded and transcribed by two coders who were independent, were then coded. The code was re-coded repeatedly, with the coders re-reading and discussing each transcript. The results of the coding process were evaluated against the original RI transcripts, giving an indication of how well the RIs captured the underlying pragmatic behavior.

Refusal Interviews (RIs)

The key question in pragmatic research is: Why do certain learners choose not to accept native-speaker norms? A recent study sought to answer this question employing a variety of research tools, such as DCTs, 프라그마틱 불법 MQs, and RIs. The participants consisted of 46 CLKs, 44 CNSs and 45 KNSs from five Korean universities. The participants were asked to complete the DCTs and MQs in their L1 or L2. Then they were invited to a RI where they were asked to reflect on their responses to the DCT situations.

The results showed that CLKs, on average, did not adhere to the patterns of native speakers in more than 40% of their responses. They did this despite the fact that they could produce patterns that resembled native speakers. They were also aware of their pragmatic resistance. They attributed their decisions to learner-internal factors such as their identities, personalities and identities that are multilingual, as well as ongoing lives. They also referred external factors, like relational affordances. For example, they described how their relationships with professors facilitated an easier performance in relation to the intercultural and linguistic standards of their university.

The interviewees expressed concerns about the social pressures or consequences they could be subject to in the event that their local social norms were not followed. However, it is prudent for future researchers to reconsider their applicability in specific situations and in various contexts. This will help them better understand the impact of different cultural contexts on the pragmatic behavior and classroom interactions of L2 students.
