Slot Rankings - How Wide Receivers Score More Touchdowns in the Slot

However, they'll need to improve their scoring on the perimeter in order to maintain their top-of-the-line performance.

Speedy wideouts are the biggest beneficiaries of moving into the slot, because they generally are more likely to be open in the field when their route isn't obstructed by a cornerback or linebacker. The only non-speedy wide receiver on the list who can benefit from more slot work is Corey Coleman, as he's an extremely reliable target on short and intermediate routes.

The bottom of the list is populated by possession-based receivers who are better on intermediate and short routes than in deep areas like Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler. Jeudy will be the Rams' primary slot receiver this year is a sleeper selection. Courtland Cooper and Amari Sutton are expected to play a greater role in downfield targets. Hamler will excel on shorter-to-mid and intermediate routes, because that's where he excelled while playing for the Bills in 2021. He could be an excellent replacement for the departed wideout Jordan Matthews.

Percentage of Snaps in the Slot

The amount of snaps a receiver makes in the slot could be a good indicator for their ability to run deep routes. However, it's not always a reliable indicator of a receiver's abilities as certain receivers excel in the slot but can't play deep and vice versa.

For instance For instance, the Eagles Alshon Jeffery is the leader in the league in targets per game (4.8) but is ranked sixth in slot receiving score (58.5). This is due to the fact that the majority of his targets have come from the outside, and it's hard to get a first down in a wide-open deep line in that setting.

On the other hand, certain receivers excel at playing inside, but struggle on the outer. For instance the Panthers gave Robby Anderson 978 snaps during the season, and he ran 74% of his slot routes as opposed to only 26% on boundary routes. That's a huge difference, and indicates how much more efficient the player is when positioned in the slot.

Furthermore, the Buccaneers' Chris Godwin lines up inside on most of his passing downs, and has a top-five slot receiving score (58.5). He also played 51% of his perimeter routes and is an expert in one-on-one coverage.

Spagnuolo maximized McDuffie's skills by placing his slot for nickel and dime packages and then shifting him to the outside when playing base defense. In addition, Moore's capability to stop big run plays has been a tremendous benefit when playing in the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While the NFL's top receivers, such as Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's important to note that their slot counterparts are also good. As a group wide receivers who have a high slot receiving grade score touchdowns roughly at the same rate as those who are on the edge. This is due to the fact that quarterbacks are more consistent with their targets when they throw to outside and slot wide receivers rather than other inside options like backfield passers and tight ends.

It's interesting to see a receiver like CeeDee lamb on this list for 2022. He plays the slot in 3 WR sets, and flanker in 2 of them. In actuality Lamb is running a greater number of routes in the slot than most players listed on this chart. This is a great way to gain matchup advantages for your team. It also helps to explain why Lamb is the most highly-rated receiver in our system.

He also plays at the X-position and makes big plays outside. Lamb isn't as explosive as the other players in this ranking but he's a high-graded wide receiver who is a good fit in the Cowboys scheme.

Mecole Hardman is another example of a player capable of putting up huge numbers on both targets. He is one of the top developer slots players in the league when it comes to taking throws from behind his shoulders. He's also a fantastic catcher who is contested.

Jalen Hilton is another player who is a slot specialist. He's lined up in this position on 85.7 percent his defensive snaps thus far in the season. He has the third-lowest EPA for targets and the fifth-best EPA for run stops among cornerbacks who play in the slot. This makes him a key player in the defensive line. On the other hand, he's had trouble to stop passes from the outside and has allowed a negative EPA against these kinds of targets. This is due to him playing with linebackers and safety players who cannot compete with Hilton's speed, size or ability to run routes.
