How to Replace Window Panes

A damaged or cracked window can be a source of frustration. This can be an opportunity to upgrade your windows to energy efficient or insulated ones and enjoy advantages like improved comfort, increased resale value and lower utility costs.

It's a project you can tackle yourself at only a fraction of the cost of hiring a professional. It requires the right tools and an hour or two of your time.

Glass

Replace your old single-paned windows with tempered insulation glass to improve energy efficiency, cut down on noise, and maintain the historical integrity of your old home. Then use the point of your chisel or back end of the putty knife to tap in the glazier's facets, as shown in Figure 11. The glazier's points should be flush against the top edge of the pane and the shoulders should be just beneath that lip.

Apply a thin layer of glazing compound on the rabbet grooves as well as the edges of the new glass. This will seal and protect the edges. Let it dry completely and cure.

If the new pane is damaged, you can use a silicone caulk or glass glue that is based on solvents to fill in the crack prior to pressing it in the sash. If the crack is not sealed, you'll need to use putty to keep the water out. After the putty has dried, wipe the oily film from the glass and let it dry completely before painting. Paint before the putty has dried completely. It will not form a good seal and may leak or discolor with time.

Paint

If you are working on a large-sized window, make sure that it is securely fixed to the frame. This task is relatively easy and fast with the right tools and techniques.

Once you're ready to begin, begin by removing the old window replacement by removing the glazing points made of metal that are connected to it.
