What is an UK Rep?

A UK Rep is an individual or company that is appointed by the manufacturer to take care of specific duties pertaining to product conformity in the UK. Depending on the specific product legislation, this may include drawing up UK Declarations of Conformity for medical devices and providing an initial point of contact to the MHRA (Medical Device Regulations Agency). Typically an Authorised Representative is also referred to as a Responsible Person.

This requirement exists regardless of whether you are a controller of data or a data processor. The UK representative must be able to represent your company in relation to your obligations under the GDPR, and act as a local point of contact for individuals and the ICO.

The UK representative needs to be a firm or organization established within the EEA and be capable of representing your company regarding your obligations under the GDPR. Typically, this is an independent law firm, however it could also be a consultant or private firm.
