What to Do With Your Rep Kit

Rep kits are an excellent way to fix your gear until you get to the trailhead to have it professionally repaired. The key is knowing what to do when you need it.

The use of dentures that are repaired at home over a long period of time can cause bone loss, irritation and tumors.

Tools

Having the right tools available is essential when you are out in the field. This kit was developed with that in mind and includes all the basic hand tools needed to repair things in the field. The tools are made of steel with minimal plastic to ensure they will stand up to use. The kit includes an afghan-like pouch with zippered for coalcracker tools, a twist awl, reamer, cutting shears and gimlets (5MM). It also comes with a bottle of coalcracker oil with illustrated instructions and a wooden spool an reamer, as well as a the twisted Awl.

Repair Patches

If you've got holes or two in your gears, consider adding some adhesive patches to your rep kit. These patches made of heavy-duty materials have high-performance glue already applied on a tough polyurethane back which allows a tear to recover. The patches are available in color or clear versions. They ensure durability against punctures, as well as sunlight, water as well as extreme temperatures and saltwater.

Surface preparation is essential to ensure successful repairs. Oils on shoes or boots, sunblock or solvents like acetone can impact adhesion. For best results, apply Seam Grip alone or with Cotol-240 Cure Accelerator to speed up curing time to 2 hours.

Adhesive patches

These patches with adhesive are ideal for those who don't wish to stay in the waiting room until they can get back on the trail. Simply roughen the tube using the included scraper, apply one of the self-adhesive patches to apply the patch.

Use the tube-scuffer tool to roughen the surface. This will aid the glue stick. Then, spread a thin layer of glue on the patch, covering an area at least as large as the patch itself. Let the glue become tacky, then press the patch down with a firm pressure and hold it in place.

This kit contains two clear, adhesive-backed Tenacious Tape fabric repair patches. It also comes with a 1/4 ounce Seam Grip urethane sealant and repair adhesive. It is perfect for reinforcing damaged sleep bags, rainwear and packs.
