They sound fantastic with a rich, bass-heavy audio profile that allows vocals and instruments to shine. Focal Bathys Wireless

The Focal Bathys Wireless are an audiophile-grade entry into the booming travel-focused, premium Bluetooth headphone market, which has been dominated by Bose and Sony offerings. But with a reputation for creating the highest quality, high-fidelity speakers, Focal couldn't simply scale down to compete in this highly competitive space. It decided to design its own earbuds with built-in ANC made of the same transducers, amplifiers and other components as its flagship products.

The result is a pair of headphones that not only offer top-of-the-line performance, Over Ear Apple Headphones but also feel luxurious and sturdy. Focal reduced the size and weight of its higher-end headphones to make them lighter and more portable, while still using magnesium for the yokes. The look is stylish and sleek, with the circular "skeletonised" design reminiscent of the company's full-sized, high-end Focal Celestee and LED backlit Focal "flame" logos on the side of each headphone that actually glow (you can toggle this feature within the app that comes with it).

When connected to your device, they run with the latest Bluetooth v5.1 technology, which includes support for SBC, AAC, aptX, and aptX Adaptive and an inbuilt DAC that can support up to 24 bits/192kHz playback. The ear cups can be folded flat for simple storage. The cable can also be detached to be used with devices that do not have Bluetooth like many cell phones.

The headphones can also be used in DAC mode, which disables internal processing to deliver a superior sound quality than Bluetooth headphones with built-in DACs. Focal declined to reveal the specific DAC they used, but when tested with a high-quality portable DAC/headphone amp, the Bathys delivered great results--including better-than-CD-quality resolution, tight bass, and an open, airy midrange.

The Focal Bathys are made to be used in planes and other noisy environments however, the DAC mode makes them ideal for more focused listening. The majority of portable headphones are closed-back and tuned for increased bass, but the Bathys provide an unbalanced, neutral sound that's perfect for rock and other genres without being overly loud. These headphones would make a great gift for the audiophile on your list.

JBL Tune 760NC

The JBL Tune 760NC is a lightweight comfortable pair of headphones with active noise cancellation. They have a bass profile that gives your audio depth and an extended battery life. They also have a durable design that is perfect for commutes and travel however they can be uncomfortable for long listening sessions because of their tight fit.

The headphones come with a decent set of controls on the earcups which allow you to manage your music and call settings. The headphones have buttons to control volume up and down, power, ANC, and the like. The buttons are surrounded by a small section of LED and you can tap them to alter the light display. The headphones offer a comfortable fit and are well-padded however, they are quite tight on your head and could be uncomfortable for people who wear glasses.

JBL's Active Noise Cancellation Technology blocks ambient sound by analyzing and interpreting sounds coming from outside the headphone. It then reverses those sounds and blocks them out, resulting in a quieter listening experience. This allows you to listen at lower volume and avoid ear fatigue. The headphones come with a built-in microphone, which allows you to make calls hands-free and also activate voice assistants.

These headphones are compatible with the majority of Bluetooth devices, including your computer and mobile phones. They also work with the majority of PS4 and Xbox One controllers to receive audio, but you won't be able to use them to connect with your teammates. The headset is similar to any other Bluetooth headphone, sporting semicircle hinges that fold flat and pivot on top of the earcups, creating a comfortable, adjustable headband. They're also lighter and portable than other gaming headsets, weighing just 265g when collapsed.

Onboard controls can be found on the right earcup with power and track control buttons as well as a recessed, multi-function button that doubles as a noise-cancellation cycle button. The controls are simple to press and responsive and they worked as advertised in my tests.

The Opus bass is an intense, well-rounded and punchy sound that has clarity and depth that you can't get from many budget headphones. The sound isn't as full-bodied as Bose's Extra Bass, but it's far superior for a $200 price tag. Mids are solid and vocals as well as the lead instruments stand out with decent clarity. I did notice a little low-end slackness, but switching the EQ to Vocal resolved the issue.

In addition, you'll find a 3.5mm analog cable and USB-C-to A adapter in the carrying case, as well as a standard airplane audio jack for those who haven't yet made the switch to all-cable audio. It's a small but welcome addition that makes it much easier to use the headphones when traveling.

The Opus was a success, just like other THX certified products.
