The Shark IQ XL

The Shark IQ XL is a smart robot that has a lot of features. It's also built fairly well and costs less than $400. It's a better robot than the eufy RoboVac G30. It feels more comfortable to use and performs better on low- and high pile carpet. It's also better at navigating around obstacles such as electrical cords.

Its battery performance is excellent and it can run for over an hour in high-bagless suction vacuums mode, 'Max. The large bagless robot navigator base station is also easy to clean - you simply remove the side bin and empty it over the trash can, there's no need for special bags for cleaning or effort. The IQ's companion app allows you to send it to specific rooms, restart the session where it started in the event that it has to charge halfway through, and schedule several cleaning sessions over the course of a day if needed.

The IQ XL did an excellent job on hard flooring, but it struggled with carpets with a medium pile. It missed larger crumbs and put debris in corners it shouldn't have. This is partly due to the robot's side brushes, that can occasionally smudge dirt or fail to funnel it in, and partially due to the fact that it travels in straight lines rather than moving in a zigzag like more advanced robots.

You can create no-go areas on the map of the IQ XL app by dragging boundary rectangles. These boxes aren't easy to draw and tweak. We prefer virtual walls.

The IQ XL also has a feature we found extremely useful called the Ultra-Clean mode. This mode doubles the robot's suction power, and utilizes its brushes to sweep the floor in a crosshatch. This is especially useful for areas that are heavily trafficked however we're disappointed that it's not available on all of the company's current models. However, you can set a timer that will automatically start a single Ultra-Clean cycle in any room of the home.

The Shark Matrix

Shark's ION series robot vacuums are a cut above the rest with their LIDAR mapping capabilities and self-emptying bases. However, the Matrix elevates the experience to the next level by offering mopping and vacuuming in one.

As with most robotic vacuums the Matrix can be used as a standard upright cleaner or set to agitate and scrub your floors with a powered pad to give your floors a more thorough clean. It can also be used in the vacuum/mop modes that uses the same cleaning pad to simultaneously scrub your floors and get rid of any stains and dirt that are stubborn. The matrix's powerful vacuuming mode is especially impressive for carpets. It utilizes a matrix grid for multiple passes to remove dirt and debris, which leads to 30% better stain removal than Roomba bagless electric robots.

The Matrix is also much simpler to use than the modern Roomba. Shark's app lets you create a spot-cleaning zone simply by moving a rectangle on the tab you have designated. Roomba users must manually name and create a cleaning zone. The Matrix also has the option of a physical button that allows you to start a clean, without opening the app.

Other features for quality of life are included with the Matrix it comes with three suction power modes (normal Eco and high-power 'Max') and recharge/resume functionality that allows it to start where it left off if it needs to return to its dock. The battery life was a bit higher than the AI Ultra's and its overall performance in removing debris across a variety of surfaces was exceptional.

The only downside to the Matrix is that it drains battery more quickly than other models, and its pet hair-cleaning performance is inconsistent. The Matrix is still a great option for most homes, and it improves on the AI Ultra in a few important ways. It is built better, recharges faster and can pick up more debris from low-pile flooring. Plus, the 'Eco-' and Max modes provide a substantial improvement over AI Ultra's "Normal" mode.
